Government officials convened on water management. Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan has directed all agencies to support impacted communities in all flood-hit regions and to intensify their efforts to ameliorate the situation.

General Prawit Wongsuwan, the Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, has ordered all relevant authorities to move promptly to restore the situation and mitigate flood damage, while also maintaining control of reservoirs that are at or above 80% capacity. His direction came at a session of the administrative subcommittee on water resources management at the Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR).

The DPM has requested that agencies boost the drainage capacity of flood water into the sea via important rivers, as well as examine and guarantee the structural integrity of levees and flood walls, the essential components of the water management system.

The DPM issued directives to begin slowing reservoir outflows. The effects on downstream regions will be lessened as a result of this.

In addition, authorities must guarantee a sufficient supply of water in reservoirs for the dry season.

Apparently this year’s rainfall is comparable to that of 2011. The effects, however, have been contained thus far, all owing to careful preparation.

Water levels in rivers and the pace of water pouring into reservoirs have stabilized, and ONWR Secretary General Surasri Kidtimonton has predicted that the country would receive less rainfall from October 11.

To assist alleviate the situation downstream and save water for the dry season, he added, several reservoirs have already halted water delivery.

Mr. Surasri has stated that while the situation is not alarming as a whole, it is important to keep an eye on places outside of the irrigation system.

At today’s subcommittee meeting, ten actions were adopted for the dry years of 2022-2033. As of early next month, the Cabinet may expect to receive these proposals. The ONWR has mandated that the relevant agencies develop action plans in light of these measures, which it would thereafter monitor and assess.
