The 2025 THE Impact Rankings assessed 2,526 universities from 130 countries, evaluating their performance against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The results place Chulalongkorn University and Chiang Mai University jointly at 44th, Mahidol University and Thammasat University at 64th, and Walailak University at 93rd in the global rankings based on overall performance.
In addition to their overall placements, several Thai institutions achieved high marks in specific SDG categories. Mahidol University was ranked 3rd globally for SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), while Chiang Mai University placed 17th for SDG 4 (Quality Education). Walailak University achieved the top global ranking for SDG 5 (Gender Equality). The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) ranked 18th for SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), and King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi was 44th for SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation). Prince of Songkla University received recognition for both SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy).
The government stated that these rankings underscore the role of Thai higher education institutions in advancing sustainability through education, research, and community service, in alignment with national policy goals for long-term development and global competitiveness.
The announcement was made by Deputy Government Spokesperson Anukul Prueksanusak, who emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting universities in their sustainability missions and praised the collaborative efforts of academic leaders, faculty, and students in achieving these international distinctions.
