Bangkok’s eastern flank is about to witness a green transformation as the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) undertakes the conversion of an 86-rai expanse into a wetland forest. Situated in the Bung Kum district, this initiative aims to offer urban residents a serene escape amidst nature while providing recreational opportunities.

Formerly known as Klong Lam Bung Kum, this area initially served as a floodwater-retention basin, playing a crucial role in mitigating flooding risks in eastern Bangkok. However, over the years, it has evolved into a beloved public park cherished by locals for its rich ecological diversity and its role as a community hub for exercise and relaxation.

Given its wetland characteristics and its adjacency to Seri Thai Park and Navaminphirom Park, the BMA has conceptualized plans to elevate this site into a district park following the Bangkok Wetland Forest (BWF) model. This development initiative includes the creation of a 3,060-meter asphalt walkway and a 420-meter waterside promenade, complete with protective measures. Moreover, extensive landscaping efforts, enhanced lighting, wastewater treatment facilities, and vehicular access restrictions are part of the comprehensive overhaul, as reported by Bangkok Post.

During a recent inspection conducted by Deputy Bangkok Governor Jakkapan Phiewngam, accompanied by other BMA officials, emphasis was placed on ensuring visitor safety within the park premises. The district office has been tasked with disseminating information regarding restricted vehicle access and enforcing regulations against activities like drinking and bonfires to safeguard both visitors and the environment.

In a broader context, initiatives like the establishment of Suan Suk Jai Park are emblematic of Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt’s ambitious 15-minute Pocket Park campaign, which aims to create over 100 community green spaces across the city. These efforts underscore the city’s commitment to enhancing urban greenery and promoting sustainable recreational spaces for its residents.
