BANGKOK — A tuk-tuk driver accused of stealing valuables worth nearly 50,000 baht from an American tourist has been arrested after a nearly two-week police investigation. The suspect, 66-year-old Boonlert Jadsanam, allegedly used a vehicle with fake license plates to carry out the theft.

The incident occurred on August 30, 2024, when American tourist Mr. James reported the theft to Chakkrawat Police Station. He stated that he had hired a yellow and blue tuk-tuk from Phaya Thai BTS station to Soi Mangkon, Samphanthawong District, for a fare of 500 baht. Upon reaching the destination, Mr. James paid with a 1,000 baht note, but the driver sped off without giving him change. To make matters worse, the driver also drove off with Mr. James’ bag, which contained important belongings, including his passport, $500 in cash, nine pieces of jewelry, and other personal items. The total value of the stolen goods was estimated at nearly 50,000 baht.

Police investigators from Chakkrawat Police Station launched an investigation and reviewed CCTV footage along the driver’s escape route. Despite the challenge posed by the fake license plate, the investigation team relentlessly pursued leads. After gathering sufficient evidence, they obtained an arrest warrant from the South Bangkok Criminal Court.

On September 11, 2024, police arrested Boonlert in the Ratchathewi District of Bangkok. The arrest occurred in Soi Rama 6, Soi 21, where officers found the tuk-tuk used in the crime. Boonlert later confessed to the crime and admitted to targeting foreigners in popular tourist areas like Nana, Pratunam, and Yaowarat to fund his drug habit. He acknowledged committing similar thefts on multiple occasions.

Boonlert now faces multiple charges, including robbery and theft at night using a vehicle. The penalties for these crimes include 2-7 years in prison and fines ranging from 40,000 to 100,000 baht for robbery. The theft charge, facilitated by the use of a vehicle, carries a penalty of up to five years imprisonment or a fine of up to 100,000 baht, or both.

Authorities are working to ensure that Boonlert is held accountable for his actions, and the case serves as a reminder for tourists to remain vigilant while navigating busy urban areas.
