AirAsia to Expand Low-Cost Flights to Europe and US

AirAsia is set to become the world’s first low-cost network airline offering long-haul services between Southeast Asia, Europe, and the United States following a major aircraft purchase agreement signed on July 4, 2025. The airline aims to expand its global reach while keeping fares significantly lower than conventional carriers.

The Malaysian-based airline signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Paris with Airbus for the purchase of 70 A321XLR aircraft, positioning Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok as key hubs for long-haul, narrow-body air travel. The aircraft are scheduled to begin delivery from 2028 through 2032.

The A321XLR, capable of flying up to nine hours and offering up to 20% lower fuel consumption per seat than previous models, is expected to open underserved routes connecting Southeast Asia to Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and the United States.

Tony Fernandes, AirAsia’s long-time steward and advisor, said the expansion aligns with the airline’s founding mission to make air travel accessible. Speaking to journalists on July 5 via Zoom, he explained that AirAsia’s next chapter involves giving ASEAN travelers affordable access to far-reaching destinations once considered out of reach.

Fernandes projected that ticket prices between Southeast Asia and Europe or the US could be 30–50% cheaper than those offered by traditional airlines. Rather than competing for market share, he said, the focus is on expanding travel opportunities for new groups of flyers.

AirAsia’s route strategy involves connecting Southeast Asia to Europe via the Middle East and the US via East Asia. Key regional airports like Phuket and Chiang Mai are also expected to benefit from increased connectivity, especially with more direct flights to China and India.

In a statement released on July 5, AirAsia Group outlined its long-term ambition to serve 150 million passengers annually by 2030. Since its founding, the airline has carried over 1.5 billion passengers. The adoption of the A321XLR aircraft plays a central role in that goal, allowing for cost-effective expansion and improvements in environmental performance.

AirAsia has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining an all-economy service model, focused on affordability and access. Fernandes stated that the airline’s core strength lies in offering simple, low-cost travel to a global audience.

The USD 12.25 billion deal, which includes firm orders for 50 aircraft and purchase rights for an additional 20, marks a pivotal moment in the carrier’s evolution. The agreement was signed in Paris during a ceremony attended by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, French officials, and representatives from both AirAsia and Airbus.

Christian Scherer, CEO of Airbus Commercial Aircraft, praised the deal as a vote of confidence in AirAsia’s renewed growth strategy. He noted that the A321XLR would allow the airline to launch nonstop flights between both primary and secondary cities around the world.

With a multi-aircraft strategy and an emphasis on fuel efficiency, AirAsia’s transformation signals a broader shift in the global aviation sector. As low-cost carriers seek to extend their reach across continents, AirAsia is positioning itself as a leader in affordable long-haul travel.
