Must read

After beating Vietnam 1-0 in the second leg of the ASEAN Championship final on Monday, Thailand successfully defended their championship (16 Jan).

After claiming victory in the Thammasat Stadium in Pathum Thani province, Thailand defeated their Southeast Asian foes 3-2 on the scoreboard.

Theerathon Bunmathan, captain of the Thai side, scored a spectacular long-range goal in the 24th minute to give Thailand the victory in front of their home supporters and the seventh regional championship in team history.

One of Thailand’s best players, Theerathon has been outstanding all tournament long and scored the game-winning goal to top off an outstanding performance. The 32-year-old originated and finished the play, which began when he received the ball from Adisak Kraisorn 25 yards away and ended when he smashed a shot with his right foot into the bottom corner of Dang Van Lam’s goal.

Since the tournament was postponed by a year because of the SARS-CoV-19 outbreak, Thailand has held the championship since it was last held in Singapore. A 2-2 draw in Hanoi on Friday gave the Thai squad a little lead going into the second leg because to the away goals rule (13 Jan).

Park Hang-Seo, Vietnam’s coach for the past five and a half years, has announced that he will step down after the conclusion of the tournament.
