Thailand’s government has set a target for all public sector agencies to transition to fully digital systems by 2026, part of a broader initiative aimed at modernising state operations and boosting national competitiveness through technology. The directive was announced after the inaugural meeting of the National AI Committee on 1 May 2025.
The plan involves an estimated investment of 500 billion baht, sourced from both public and private sectors, including international stakeholders. This funding will support the development of digital infrastructure and the implementation of artificial intelligence in state functions. Authorities say the shift is essential to respond to global economic changes and to accelerate Thailand’s currently modest growth trajectory.
A central feature of the strategy is the rollout of governance frameworks to ensure responsible AI deployment, underlining the administration’s focus on ethical and sustainable technological adoption. Officials suggest that the advancement of AI services must go hand in hand with oversight to mitigate potential risks.
The digital transformation plan was introduced under the leadership of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who chaired the AI committee meeting. Government spokesperson Sasikarn Wattanachan emphasised that the initiative reflects a sense of urgency among policymakers. The meeting was attended by various state and private representatives who are expected to support the plan’s rollout.
