Beginning April 21, 2025, households in six Bangkok districts will be eligible for a discount on waste collection fees if they separate food waste from general trash, part of a new initiative led by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to promote environmentally responsible waste management. The program aims to reduce landfill waste and prepare residents for an upcoming increase in collection fees scheduled for October.

The pilot scheme, covering Bang Phlat, Bang Kho Laem, Lat Phrao, Phaya Thai, Thon Buri, and Lat Krabang, encourages residents to participate by registering through the BKK Waste Pay mobile application. Successful applicants will receive designated green waste bags specifically for food scraps.

The BMA’s Environment Department plans to assess the program’s effectiveness with district officials before considering expansion to other parts of the city. As part of the initiative, food waste will be collected two to three times per week. Authorities are also promoting alternative uses for food waste, such as converting it into animal feed or organic fertilizer.

Bangkok governor adviser Pornphrom Vikitsreth announced the program and emphasized that public participation is key to its success.
