A French tourist was fatally struck by a car while crossing a poorly lit pedestrian crossing in Kanchanaburi, western Thailand, late on the evening of April 2. The incident, which occurred near the JJ Market area at approximately 10:50 p.m., has raised renewed concerns about road safety and infrastructure in the area.
According to CCTV footage reviewed by local authorities, the victim had initially paused at the road’s median strip before stepping onto the crossing. As he attempted to reach the opposite side, a black sedan approached at high speed. The man appeared to notice the vehicle too late and tried to run, but was struck and thrown onto the roadside.
Emergency responders from the Pitak Kan Foundation were dispatched to the scene and administered first aid. The victim sustained serious injuries, including large wounds to his right arm and left shoulder, along with multiple abrasions. He was transported to Paholpolpayuhasena Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Police have identified the deceased as Mr. Clement, a 40-year-old French national. The driver of the vehicle, a young man who remained at the scene along with a female passenger, has been cooperating with the investigation.
Local residents and a reporter visiting the site have highlighted longstanding safety issues at the crossing. Observations confirmed the zebra stripes were faded and barely visible, with no flashing signals or adequate lighting to alert drivers. A 14-year-old resident described the area as quiet at night and noted that speeding is common, urging motorists to exercise caution to prevent further incidents.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any charges will be filed, but the accident has prompted calls for improved safety measures at pedestrian crossings throughout the city.
