Severe flooding has wreaked havoc in the Mae Taeng district of Chiang Mai, affecting both local residents and elephant shelters in the area. The shelters, which are home to more than 300 elephants, saw their food supplies washed away in the floodwaters, creating an urgent need for assistance.
The call for food donations was made public via the Maetaeng Elephant Park and Clinic’s Facebook page. The park stated that, while it currently has an adequate supply of banana stems, it is in desperate need of slower-ripening crops such as pumpkins, sugar cane, Napier grass, tamarind, and corn to feed the elephants in the coming days.
Donations are being accepted at the Maetaeng Elephant Park in tambon Kuet Chang until Saturday, as road access to Ban Mae Taman and Ban Muang Kuet—areas cut off due to the flooding—is expected to reopen afterward.
