Thailand has set forth a vision for enhancing regional cooperation and promoting the “Asian Century” agenda as it prepares to take over the Chairmanship of the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) in 2025. The primary focus will be on fostering collaboration among member countries and utilizing initiatives like “Sports Diplomacy” to bridge cultural divides and strengthen international relationships.
During her address at the 3rd ACD Leaders’ Summit in Doha, Qatar, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra underscored the pivotal role of sports in promoting peace and cooperation among nations. She commended Qatar for successfully hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup, highlighting how sports can serve as a unifying force.
In her remarks to leaders from 35 member nations, the Prime Minister outlined Thailand’s strategic priorities. These include capitalizing on the country’s strengths in agriculture and food production to enhance trade networks and bolster the global food supply chain. She noted that Thailand is making substantial investments in land, rail, and water transport infrastructure, as well as expanding airport capacities, all aimed at establishing the nation as a gateway connecting East and West.
The Prime Minister called on ACD member countries to collaborate on developing new trade routes that would stimulate economic growth and solidify Asia’s position as a global economic hub. As the incoming Chair of the ACD in 2025, Thailand plans to focus on six key pillars of cooperation: Connectivity, Science and Technology, Education and Human Resources, Food, Water, and Energy Security, Culture and Tourism, and Sustainable Development. A new pillar dedicated to Trade and Investment Cooperation is also being considered to further enhance intra-regional commerce.
Prime Minister Shinawatra emphasized the importance of the ACD as Asia’s only pan-continental framework, which is vital for uniting diverse regions and fostering collaboration in addressing global challenges such as climate change and geopolitical conflicts.
Additionally, the Prime Minister called for a comprehensive review of the global financial system, stressing the need for a balanced and resilient structure that benefits developing countries. To support this initiative, Thailand plans to host a high-level meeting in 2025 to discuss reforms aimed at creating a more inclusive global financial system.
