Prime Minister’s Office Minister Jiraporn Sindhuprai has instructed the Office of Consumer Protection Board to initiate an investigation into Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD. The inquiry aims to determine whether the company’s recent practice of offering significant discounts on its vehicles violates Thailand’s Consumer Protection Act, potentially disadvantaging car buyers.

The investigation was prompted by a complaint from a buyer who purchased a BYD Dolphin vehicle on April 30, enticed by a 40,000 baht discount offered under the impression that the promotion would conclude by month’s end. Subsequently, BYD extended its discount campaign, increasing incentives up to 100,000 baht for the Dolphin model. Recently, on July 1st, BYD intensified its promotional efforts by introducing discounts of up to 340,000 baht across four new models of the BYD ATTO 3.

Jiraporn emphasized that the Consumer Protection Board plans to facilitate discussions between the company and affected buyers at its office, aiming to mediate any grievances or disputes that arise. Buyers who believe they have been treated unfairly are encouraged to lodge complaints via various channels, including the board’s hotline at 1166, the official website www.ocpb.go.th, or at Damrongtham complaint centers located throughout all provinces.

The Office of Consumer Protection Board’s investigation seeks to ensure transparency and fairness in consumer transactions amid concerns over BYD’s promotional practices.
