On July 1, 2024, wildlife officials responded swiftly to aid an injured elephant named “Playdern” at Khao Chamao-Khao Wong National Park. The 30-year-old male elephant, weighing approximately 3 tons, sustained a left hind leg injury while navigating near Nong Phuen village, Khao Chamao District, Rayong Province.

Ms. Matamon Kaewpruthachai, head veterinarian at Wildlife Rescue Unit 2 (Twin Ranges), explained that the incident prompted immediate intervention from a specialized team. The team, including veterinarians and wildlife health specialists from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, along with volunteers, carefully monitored and treated Playdern. The injured leg showed a wound measuring approximately 1 inch wide and 2 centimeters deep, with signs of infection. Additionally, an elevated ridge-like lesion was noted on the left hind leg’s rear.

Veterinarians drained the abscess, irrigated the wound with saline solution, and applied antiseptic cream. Subsequently, antibiotics to prevent infection, pain relievers, muscle tonics, blood supplements, internal parasite prevention, and insect repellents were administered. Blood samples were also collected for general health checks, including screening for Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus (EEHV) and antibiotic resistance.

Following treatment, a microchip (ID: 933076400508722) was implanted behind Playdern’s right ear for identification purposes. The team remains vigilant in monitoring his recovery closely.
