The Thai government is focusing on boosting revenue through the growing foreign film production industry, which has been thriving post-COVID-19 pandemic.
On June 24, 2024, Minister of Tourism and Sports, Sermsak Pongpanich, highlighted the government’s recognition of the significant impact foreign films have on tourism. These productions entice tourists to visit various film locations and follow in the footsteps of famous actors. In 2023, foreign film productions generated over 6.753 billion baht, marking a record high since Thailand began promoting itself as a filming destination. From January to May 2024 alone, the country hosted film productions valued at 3.416 billion baht.
The Thai government believes that the country’s diverse and stunning settings, experienced local crews, supportive government bodies, and the enticing 20% cash rebate incentive make Thailand an increasingly attractive location for foreign film productions. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has set an ambitious target to generate over 7.5 billion baht from foreign film productions by the end of 2024. Additionally, they aim to promote film tourism, drawing visitors to sites featured in major international movies filmed in Thailand, significantly boosting the local economy.
Minister Sermsak also disclosed that Ms. Penpisut Jintasopon, Secretary to the Minister of Tourism and Sports, had been assigned to welcome Mr. Scott Schaeffer, Senior Vice President of HBO Production for “The White Lotus S3.” This globally acclaimed series, known for its multiple Emmy Awards, has been filming in Thailand since February 2024. Mr. Schaeffer commended the professionalism of the Thai crew and the support provided by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, as well as other relevant government agencies and local communities. He particularly praised the world-class beauty of filming locations such as Koh Samui, Phuket, and various islands in the Gulf of Thailand.
The decision to film the series in Thailand was primarily influenced by the country’s appealing incentive measures, which HBO and Warner Bros. have recognized as the best in Asia. The release of the series is anticipated to draw tourists to these filming locations, generate revenue for the tourism sector, create employment opportunities, and stimulate economic activity, positively impacting the future of Thailand’s tourism industry.
The event saw the attendance of various officials, underscoring the government’s commitment to leveraging the film industry for economic growth.
