Thailand has embarked on a strategic economic shift towards high-value, high-tech industries with the launch of the “IGNITE THAILAND: Future Workforce for Future Industry” initiative. Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation Supamas Isarabhakdi revealed this ambitious plan during a vision statement event held yesterday, June 17, in Bangkok. The initiative aims to bolster sectors such as semiconductors, advanced electronics, electric vehicles (EV), and artificial intelligence (AI), emphasizing workforce upskilling and reskilling.

Key stakeholders including governmental and industry leaders attended the event where Deputy Prime Minister Anutin highlighted significant foreign corporate interest, citing Apple Inc.’s intention to establish a campus at Chiang Mai University aimed at nurturing software development talent.

Minister Supamas outlined a comprehensive strategy to cultivate over 280,000 skilled professionals in these fields over the next five years. Immediate initiatives include short-term Upskill/Reskill courses, the Coop+ Program facilitating student employment post-graduation, and international internship opportunities. The plan also includes transforming labs into advanced training centres and establishing new hubs across Thailand dedicated to advancing critical technological sectors.

This initiative underscores Thailand’s commitment to integrating education, policy, and business partnerships to drive growth in high-tech industries. By enhancing collaboration between academia and industry, Thailand aims to position itself as a regional leader in technological innovation and economic advancement.
