Thailand is advancing its plan to join the intergovernmental organization BRICS, which is expanding beyond its founding members: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

On May 28, 2024, government spokesman Chai Wacharonke announced that the Thai cabinet had approved a draft of the official letter expressing Thailandโ€™s intention to become a BRICS member. This move aligns Thailand with other countries that have recently joined the bloc, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, which officially became members on January 1, 2024. Thailand is now among the next group of 15 countries being considered for admission.

The letter highlights Thailand’s recognition of the importance of multilateralism and the increasing influence of developing countries on the global stage. It states that Thailandโ€™s vision aligns with BRICS principles and outlines the anticipated benefits of membership, such as enhancing Thailandโ€™s international role and expanding its opportunities to contribute to shaping a new world order.

Chai Wacharonke noted that BRICS had invited aspiring member countries to participate in the 16th BRICS summit, scheduled to be held in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24, 2024. Participation in this summit is seen as a crucial step for Thailand to expedite its membership process and strengthen its position as a prominent developing nation.

In addition to its BRICS aspirations, Thailand has also signaled its intention to apply for membership in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which includes 38 of the world’s most developed economies.

The announcement marks a significant step for Thailand as it seeks to enhance its global standing and influence through strategic international partnerships.

Attending the BRICS summit in Kazan will provide Thailand with a platform to further its membership ambitions and engage with key global players in developing collaborative solutions to international challenges.
