In an unexpected twist, amidst the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, authorities in Phuket found nationals from both countries gathered around a poker table, gambling away in Thailand.
Undercover officers from the Phuket City Police Station executed a raid on a residence along Thepkrasattri Road in Phuket Town’s Ratchada sub-district at 1:45 a.m. on Wednesday, March 20. Acting on a tip-off suggesting illicit gambling activities, the authorities monitored the location before witnessing the door swing open, prompting their intervention.
Upon entry, law enforcement discovered a group of Russian and Ukrainian individuals engaged in a poker game reminiscent of a casino setting. The subsequent arrest saw the confiscation of incriminating evidence, including a poker table, three decks of cards, 318 chips valued at approximately 79,600 baht, a dealer button, and an hourglass.
Among those apprehended were Mr. Oleksandr Shpetny, identified as the Ukrainian dealer, alongside Mr. Evgeni Vlegzhanin, Mr. Rodion Elonov, Mr. Ruslan Kolontyrski, and Ms. Ekaterina Morozova, all Russian nationals. The five suspects were later transported to the Phuket Provincial Police Investigation Division for further interrogation.
Reportedly, authorities had previously attempted to raid the same group, only to be thwarted by stringent security measures surrounding the premises. Additionally, the use of chips, rather than cash or cryptocurrencies, further complicated law enforcement’s efforts to apprehend the offenders.
Charges were brought against Mr. Shpetny and Ms. Morozova for allegedly “operating as a bookmaker and accepting bets on poker games illegally for monetary gain.” Meanwhile, Mr. Vlegzhanin, Mr. Elonov, and Mr. Kolondyrski faced accusations of “participating in an illegal poker game for monetary gain.” Confessions were reportedly obtained from Mr. Shpetny, Mr. Vlegzhanin, Mr. Elonov, and Mr. Kolondyrski, while Ms. Morozova maintained her innocence.
The incident underscores the global reach of gambling activities and the complexities faced by law enforcement agencies in combating illegal operations, even across geopolitical divides.
