Khon Kaen, Thailand – Khon Kaen province is gearing up for a significant transformation in its public transportation landscape with the announcement of plans to construct a Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. This ambitious undertaking, slated to commence in 2025, marks a pivotal moment for the region, signaling a leap forward in enhancing connectivity and mobility. Set to become the first LRT system outside Bangkok, this project holds the promise of modernizing transit infrastructure, starting with a designated route encircling the scenic Bueng Kaen Nakhon Reservoir.
The initial phase of the project encompasses a 4.4-kilometer stretch, with a comprehensive feasibility study already concluded. Anticipated to be operational by 2027, the construction phase is projected to span approximately two years, requiring an estimated investment of 650 million baht. Following its completion, attention will pivot towards the expansive main LRT line project, extending from Samran to Tha Phra subdistricts. This extensive segment, covering a distance of 22.8 kilometers, necessitates a substantial financial commitment of 26.96 billion baht.
Amidst preparations for the forthcoming construction, negotiations with financial institutions are underway to determine favorable interest rates for the Samran-Tha Phra project. Concurrently, meticulous area surveys are being conducted to facilitate seamless execution. Officials are diligently working towards finalizing these crucial details within the year, paving the way for construction to commence as scheduled in 2025.
