On October 16, 2023, the Cabinet granted its approval, giving the green light for a significant change in Bangkok’s electric train fare system. Effective immediately, passengers can travel across the Purple and Red Lines at a flat fare of 20 baht. This development was shared by Mr. Pichet Kunathamrak, the Director-General of the Department of Rail Transport. The alteration is anticipated to enhance the accessibility and affordability of the electric train network, with the operational usage set to commence in November.

The announcement encompassed a fare reduction plan for two essential electric train routes: the Purple Line from Khlong Bang Phai Station to Tao Poon Station and the Red Line from Bang Sue Central Station to Rangsit Station. The Ministry of Transport, led by Mr. Suriya Juangroongruangkit, Minister of Transport, plans to mark the official commencement of this fare alteration at 11:00 a.m. with an inaugural journey from Bang Sue Central Station.

Prior to this decision, Mr. Suriya had indicated his intentions to inspect the system personally following the Cabinet’s decision. The efficiency and readiness of the system were confirmed by the MRTA Governor, paving the way for a swift initiation, ideally around 11:00 a.m. on Monday.

This strategic reduction in fares was officially revealed as a government initiative, overseen by the Ministry of Transport, aiming to ease the financial burden on commuters. The fare reduction policy was designed to ensure a maximum fare cap of 20 baht, a substantial decrease from the prior variable fares ranging between 14 to 42 baht. Commencing from October 16, this fare revision is set to positively impact the daily commute of countless passengers.

Initially, this fare policy was intended to roll out by the end of 2023, a gesture to benefit the public. However, due to the escalating cost of living attributed to international unrest influencing oil prices and affecting vehicle users directly, the government expedited the policy’s implementation. This move signifies a timely response to the evolving economic landscape and its implications on the populace.

Furthermore, Mr. Suriya emphasized the Ministry of Transport’s commitment to extending this fare policy across the entire electric train network within Bangkok and its surrounding areas. A joint committee, featuring private sector involvement, will be formed to expedite this expansion within the next two years. Regarding potential line changes and corresponding ticketing, Mr. Suriya clarified that the current system necessitates a fare for each journey across the network. However, enhancements are in progress to streamline this process, facilitating easier line changes for passengers. The anticipated integration is expected to be operational by November 1st, aiming to simplify the overall travel experience for commuters.
