The Ministry of Transport has been given the directive to address the issue of skyrocketing plane tickets in the short and long term, and the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) is in the process of formulating a five-point strategy to solve the problems that are preventing the tourism industry from recovering.

According to the Deputy Transport Minister Atirat Ratanasate, the ministry has reportedly informed Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha on the progress as well as future steps to combat the skyrocketing ticket prices that have been caused by an increase in demand as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak. During the meeting, the ministry presented the plan that had been developed by CAAT that includes increasing the number of ground-handling operators, relaxing certain rules, offering incentives for airlines, and implementing a subsidy policy in order to assist airlines in flying to less popular destinations within the country.

Following the presentation of these options to the Prime Minister, the Deputy Minister reported that the Prime Minister instructed authorities to move on with the plan in order to solve the issue as quickly as possible. Gen. Prayut has also given instructions to CAAT to keep a careful eye on the pricing of domestic tickets, and he has urged the general public to make travel preparations in advance, particularly during the holiday season, in order to avoid having to purchase expensive tickets.
