Bangkok by the Office of the Environment invited everyone to join together in turning off the lights for 1 hour to reduce global warming from 8.30-9.30 PM on March 26, 2022.

Bangkok by the Office of the Environment and 50 district offices created a campaign inviting people, companies, shops, entrepreneurs, and shops to join the activity “Turn off the lights for 1 hour to reduce global warming (60+ Earth Hour 2022)” on Saturday, March 26, 2022, from 8:30 – 9:30 PM for 1 hour with cities in over 190 countries around the world. This is actually a recurring campaign held on every last Saturday of March.

In Thailand, PEA (Provincial Electricity Authority) and MEA (Metropolitan Electricity Authority) led the activity. Meanwhile, Central Retail Corporation Public Company Limited (CRC) also turned off the lights in front of the stores nationwide of Central and Robinson Department Stores, Robinson Lifestyle Shopping Center, Tops Market, Tops Superstore, Central Food Hall, Tops Daily, Coffee Millie Mart, Thai Watsadu and BNB Home. There were also public-private organizations, hundreds of roads, and 5 main landmarks in the heart of Bangkok participating activities as follows: Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram), Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahaviharn, Wat Saket Ratchaworawihan, Rama VIII Bridge, and the Giant Swing.

Bangkok Governor stated that organizing a one-hour power off activity every year for 14 consecutive years (from 2008 – 2022) has helped reduce electricity consumption by 22,398 megawatts and reduce carbon dioxide by 12,235.40 tons, representing a cost of electricity worth more than 80.90 million baht.

Started in 2007 by WWF and partners as a symbolic lights-out event in Sydney to raise awareness of climate change, Earth Hour is now one of the world’s largest grassroots movements for the environment. Held every year on the last Saturday of March, Earth Hour engages supporters in more than 190 countries and territories, all taking action to ensure a brighter future for people and the planet. Earth Hour has become a catalyst for positive environmental impact, driving major legislative changes by harnessing the power of the people and collective action.
