A revamped walkway linking two popular public parks in Bangkok will be completed for pedestrians and cyclists in September 2022.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said the renovation of the so-called green bridge connecting the Lumpini and Benjakitti parks will begin in March 2022 and be ready for residents in September 2022.
The renovation will include an elevated park, better bike, and running lanes, and areas dedicated for other activities including a rest area to make it a new landmark for the capital.
The walkway was built in 1999 to connect the two parks with access for bicycles on the 1.6-kilometer long route. After 2015, the Bureau of Public Works has constructed a pedestrian path – a sky bike path connecting the parks. “Lumpini Park and Benjakitti Park” or the Green Bridge Total distance is 1.3 km, with another renovation in 2019 after receiving complaints about safety and crime.
In the past, the Green Bridge area was reported as the country’s second most vulnerable area for crimes. This was due to insufficient street lights. There were also a few up-down points along the bridge, including many problems such as the environment around the bridge and under a dilapidated bridge, a problematic bridge structure that has deteriorated over time.
As a result, there has been a push to renovate the Green Bridge to become a new landmark in Bangkok. Most recently, the construction budget is over 260 million baht, which is expected to be completed by 2022.
