ONE Championship founder Chatri Sityodtong has expressed his excitement for the upcoming Hollywood film The Beast In Me, which will feature both the organization and Muay Thai prominently. Starring Russell Crowe, the film aims to bring Thailand and its martial arts tradition into the global spotlight.

Production is set to begin in December, with a key scene scheduled to be filmed during a ONE Friday Fights event on 24 January at Bangkok’s Impact Arena, according to Sityodtong. The film, co-written by Crowe, will integrate ONE Championship’s events into its storyline, with the actor portraying an ex-fighter turned coach within the organization.

“This is not just a cameo,” Sityodtong stated during a press conference for ONE Friday Fights 81. He explained that Crowe’s character mentors a former world champion seeking revenge after his brother is injured in an illegal blow during a fight. The movie’s plot is closely tied to ONE Championship, with live footage from actual events being used.

The CEO highlighted his enthusiasm for the collaboration, noting, “A Hollywood blockbuster with Russell Crowe has the potential to be a massive global hit. We’re thrilled to be part of it.”

Sityodtong also stressed the authenticity of the film, confirming that ONE Championship had significant input on the script and that many of its athletes, along with gym owners and promoters, would appear in the film. The final scene will be shot in Thailand, further cementing the nation’s role in the project.

The Beast In Me will also film in the United States and Australia, expanding its international reach, Sityodtong told the Bangkok Post. He described the project as a personal and national milestone: “This is a dream come true for me and, I believe, for Thailand as well.”

The Thai film “How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies” has made waves in the Singaporean box office, shattering records with its emotional resonance. Described by a netizen as a “tearjerker,” the movie’s impact on audiences has been profound. Bryan Wong, writing for “The 8days” online, reported that the film achieved the largest opening weekend for a Thai production in Singapore.

Over the weekend, Wong found himself inundated with friends praising the film, some hailing it as the best of the year. What’s particularly noteworthy is the trend of moviegoers sharing their emotional experiences on TikTok, recording their reactions before, during, and after watching the poignant narrative unfold.

Numerous viewers attested to the film’s emotional intensity, with reports of copious tissue usage during its two-hour runtime. One user even advised others to come prepared with multiple tissue boxes. Another recounted hearing people sobbing throughout the screening.

In Thailand, the film amassed a staggering Bt250 million within its first 14 days of release, underscoring its widespread appeal. It also secured its place as the second-highest-grossing Asian title in Indonesian cinema history, with over two million admissions in just 13 days.

Meanwhile, Free Malaysia Today (FMT) online delved into the film’s resonance in Malaysian households. Despite its seemingly simple plot, the directorial debut of Pat Boonnitipat strikes a chord with its portrayal of familial complexities. With Malaysia’s aging population, the themes explored in the film hit close to home, particularly the depiction of intergenerational dynamics and caregiving responsibilities.

According to FMT, scenes depicting the grandson’s involvement in his grandmother’s daily life are likely to strike a chord with local audiences. The film’s warmth emanates from its authentic portrayal of the bond between the protagonist and his grandmother, resonating with viewers of all ages.

While the generation gap is evident, the film emphasizes the possibility of connection and understanding between generations, showcasing the mutual care and support that transcend differences.

In a bid to enhance its presence on the global filmmaking stage, Thailand is rolling out an enticing initiative for foreign film productions. The Thailand Film Office, under the Department of Tourism, recently unveiled updated incentive measures aimed at attracting international filmmakers to the Southeast Asian nation. Effective from the start of the new year, January 1, 2024, the highlight of this initiative is a substantial cash rebate of up to 20% for production expenditures exceeding 150 million baht, approximately equivalent to US$4.2 million.

The primary incentive structure offers a commendable 15% cash rebate for productions boasting local expenditures exceeding 50 million baht, roughly US$1.3 million. An additional maximum 5% can be earned through various qualifying criteria. This supplementary 5% is distributed across different categories, with 5% allocated for projects that support the cultural identity of Thailand, 3% for those employing Thai nationals in key team positions, 2% for filming in designated tourism locations, and a further 5% for productions with a spending threshold surpassing 150 million baht, commencing production from the beginning of this year.

Foreign film producers eyeing Thailand as a potential shooting location now have a compelling reason to explore this cinematic haven. For those intrigued by the prospect, the Thailand Film Office can be reached for further details and assistance through their official website at Thailand Film Office.

The announcement marks a strategic move by Thailand to position itself as an attractive destination for global filmmakers, leveraging its unique cultural assets and breathtaking locations. While fostering economic growth in the local film industry, these measures also aim to create a symbiotic relationship by encouraging projects that contribute to the preservation of Thailand’s cultural heritage and provide employment opportunities for its citizens.

For filmmakers considering Thailand as their next production hub, the appeal goes beyond the picturesque landscapes and vibrant culture. The financial incentives, coupled with the diverse and skilled local talent pool, make it a compelling choice in the competitive realm of global filmmaking. As Thailand opens its doors wider to international productions, the global cinematic community eagerly awaits the visual spectacles that may emerge from this mutually beneficial collaboration.

As this announcement takes center stage in the global film industry, key officials from the Department of Tourism and Thailand Film Office, alongside other dignitaries, have expressed their enthusiasm for the potential boost to the country’s economy and the cultural exchange that will unfold through these cinematic endeavors. Foreign film producers are encouraged to seize this opportunity, tapping into the rich tapestry of Thailand’s landscapes and cultural heritage for their upcoming projects.

In a recent cinematic revelation, Srettha Thavisin, the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, bestowed high praise upon the Thai film “Sapparor,” or “Undertaker” in English, for its exceptional portrayal of local culture. This momentous announcement, made during a special screening on the evening of October 25th, took place in the company of Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Deputy Chairperson of the National Soft Power Strategy Committee. The occasion served as a platform for the Prime Minister to express his enthusiasm for the film and his commitment to boosting the presence of Thai cinema on the global stage.

“Sapparor,” a captivating narrative that offers a fresh perspective on a seldom-explored profession within Thai society, has deeply resonated with Prime Minister Thavisin. He believes that the film not only sheds light on the intricacies of a unique vocation but also provides valuable insights into the rich tapestry of Thai culture. With this in mind, the Prime Minister pledged unwavering support for talented directors, emphasizing the importance of enabling both short and feature-length films to achieve recognition worldwide.

A notable aspect of the Prime Minister’s statement is his stance on censorship and content regulation. He contends that these traditional practices are in need of a modern-day overhaul, a call for more creative freedom in the Thai film industry. This proposition is particularly crucial for short films, which often face funding constraints. While acknowledging the challenges, Prime Minister Thavisin highlighted that the Committee on Soft Power has already initiated efforts to address the issue of resource scarcity within the industry.

“Sapparor,” a cinematic masterpiece that subtly weaves elements of “soft power” into the fabric of rural life in Northeastern Thailand, transcends conventional storytelling boundaries. The film’s focus on the profound cultural significance of funeral rituals and traditions is setting a new benchmark for the Thai film industry. Since its release on October 5th, 2023, “Sapparor” has enjoyed remarkable success, amassing an astounding 500 million Baht in domestic box office earnings. This resounding achievement is not limited to financial milestones alone; the film continues to captivate audiences, drawing widespread acclaim and maintaining strong ticket sales. Notably, “Sapparor” has achieved the distinction of becoming the highest-grossing Thai film in the past eight years, solidifying its place in the annals of Thai cinema history.

In the world of film anticipation, “The Creator” is a significant release of the year—a blend of action and science fiction. It portrays a future where humanity and artificial intelligence clash. At its core, the story follows Joshua (John David Washington), an ex-special forces agent coping with personal tragedy and on a mission to confront the elusive Creator, the genius behind advanced AI. Along this journey, he crosses paths with Alphie (Madeleine Yuma Voyles), a young individual with the power to shape the fate of humanity and the world.

At the heart of this film’s captivating experience lies its futuristic setting, adorned with breathtaking landscapes and characters wielding cutting-edge weaponry, immersing viewers into a speculative future. This visual extravaganza whisks the audience away into a possible yet surreal reality. For those curious about the filming locations that brought “The Creator” to life, we delve into a detailed exploration.

Directed by Gareth Edwards, renowned for his works like “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “Godzilla,” the allure of “The Creator” goes beyond its plot. The film’s intriguing aspect is its choice of Southeast Asia as a primary filming location, with Thailand prominently featured. Spanning over 16 provinces across Thailand’s diverse regions, the film offers a unique perspective on the country’s tourist attractions and the way of life through a Hollywood lens. As we traverse the movie’s footsteps through Thailand, it’s a cinematic adventure worth embarking upon.

Principal photography for “The Creator” commenced in January 2022 under the working title ‘True Love,’ extending over four intense months before concluding production in late May. The film’s expansive narrative unfolds against a backdrop spanning the Bangkok metropolitan region and other regions across the globe, including England.

A significant portion of the movie was shot in and around the bustling Bangkok metropolitan region, a bustling urban expanse surrounding the capital. The production unit established its base at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Samut Prakan, situated just outside the metropolitan area. Additionally, Makkasan station of Bangkok’s Airport Rail Link (ARL) found its way into several scenes, further enriching the movie’s tapestry.

From my perspective, I viewed the movie at Bluport, located in Hua Hin, a lesser-known coastal town in Thailand. To my astonishment, this quiet town was mentioned in the movie’s dialogue. Colonel Howell, the secondary antagonist driven by a profound aversion to AI due to the loss of her sons in the war, revealed that one of them was entangled with a bargirl in Hua Hin, eventually surrendering her son to the AI forces.

Gareth Edwards shared insights into the painstaking efforts undertaken to find authentic exterior locations, aiming for a genuine and immersive experience for the audience. During the shoot in Thailand, they scouted for technologically advanced facilities and chanced upon a particle accelerator, a pinnacle of advanced technology in Thailand. Despite initial skepticism, they gained access, thanks to the allure of the filmmaker’s portfolio, even engaging the facility’s eminent scientists in the film.

Inside Bangkok’s train station

Beyond Bangkok, the production team explored various locations across Thailand, including Ban Mung, Sangkhla Buri, Chiang Dao, and Sam Phan Bok, also known as the Grand Canyon of Thailand. The expansive list of filming locations encompasses renowned spots such as Ao Phang Nga National Park, Ao Nang, Samet Nangshe, and more, offering a cinematic adventure that traverses Thailand’s stunning landscapes.

Moreover, a significant part of the film was shot in Buckinghamshire, England, utilizing the state-of-the-art facilities at Pinewood Studios, showcasing their dedication to authentic production and reducing reliance on green screens. Gareth Edwards highlighted the global scale of the project, featuring around 80 locations worldwide. He emphasized a minimalist approach, opting for small crews and real-world locations over extensive sets, allowing the film to showcase the splendor of various international sites.

In summary, “The Creator” isn’t just a movie but an artful amalgamation of visuals and sounds spanning the globe. Exploring its filming locations offers a glimpse into diverse and alluring settings. For cinephiles and travel enthusiasts alike, following the footsteps of this film unveils a kaleidoscope of captivating destinations, painting a vivid picture of a world both surreal and mesmerizing.

Thailand has solidified its position as a sought-after location for foreign filmmakers, with over 200 international films choosing the country as their backdrop during the first half of this year, generating a revenue of 1.84 billion baht.

Deputy Government Spokeswoman Tipanan Sirichana proudly announced these encouraging statistics on June 29, highlighting the unwavering support of the government in promoting Thailand as an ideal destination for global film productions.

Among the latest foreign productions being filmed in Thailand is a Warner Bros Discovery project that revolves around Thai cuisine. This US production, starring popular Thai couple Prin “Mark” Suparat and Kimberley Anne Woltemas, showcases the country’s picturesque locations. The film is set to be broadcasted on HBO and HBO Go, further enhancing Thailand’s allure as a filming destination.

Tipanan noted that the revenue generated from the 222 foreign films between January and June 16 reflects substantial growth in the industry. Compared to the same period last year, the number of film productions has increased by 12, contributing to a revenue growth of 132.8 million baht.

Since 2016, Thailand has welcomed approximately 740 film productions, generating a total revenue of 4.86 billion baht. Remarkably, even in the face of challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, 121 film shoots have taken place in the kingdom. The government recognizes the filming industry in Thailand as a lucrative contributor to the country’s soft power and an important source of income.

Acknowledging the immense potential, the cabinet approved a proposal on February 7 to increase cash rebates for film producers using Thailand as a shooting location. The cash rebates were raised from 15% and 20% to 20% and 30% for a two-year period. Additionally, the cash rebate ceiling per film was raised from 75 million baht to 150 million baht. These measures have successfully attracted more filmmakers to choose Thailand as their preferred destination for filming.

Thailand has firmly entrenched itself as a sought-after destination for international production houses, continuing to attract filmmakers from around the globe. Recent developments have solidified this reputation, as the enchanting Hat Yai City in Songkhla province played host to two esteemed productions: a Singaporean series and a television series commissioned by the renowned American network, HBO.

The influx of film crews into the region has not only boosted the country’s economy but has also breathed new life into Thailand’s own film industry. Local communities have reaped the benefits of these filming endeavors, as the continuous presence of production teams has injected substantial revenue into their economies. Through their extended shooting schedules, the dedicated crews have contributed significantly to the financial well-being of these communities, fostering an atmosphere of symbiotic prosperity.

In light of these successful collaborations, Mr. Patt Rakthongthana, an experienced local coordinator who has worked closely with international production studios, has expressed his belief that Thailand can further enhance its allure to global filmmakers. He advocates for the implementation of efficient management strategies and the relaxation of certain regulations to create an even more enticing environment for international production houses.

With proper oversight and streamlined processes, Thailand can continue to captivate filmmakers worldwide, ensuring its status as a premier filming destination. The prospects for the country’s film industry remain promising, promising both lucrative returns and a flourishing local ecosystem that benefits from the international spotlight.

In a turn of events that has left the entertainment industry reeling, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) has declared a strike, with thousands of writers taking to the picket lines in Los Angeles and New York. The last time the WGA went on strike was in 2007-2008, which lasted for 100 days and caused losses of around $2.5 billion. This time around, the stakes are just as high, with major TV shows and movies facing cancellation, and the future of the industry hanging in the balance.

The cause of the strike is a familiar one: writers feel that they are not being fairly compensated for their work in the age of streaming, where companies like Netflix and Amazon are making billions of dollars but not sharing enough of the wealth with the creators of the content. The WGA is calling for higher minimums for writers, better residuals, and a bigger share of the profits from streaming services. The guild is also fighting for better working conditions, as many writers are facing long hours and burnout in a highly competitive industry.

The impact of the strike is already being felt across Hollywood, with several high-profile shows and movies facing cancellations or delays. “There’s too much work and not enough pay,” said demonstrator Sean Crespo, a 46-year-old writer whose credits include the former TBS show “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee.”

As the strike continues, the pressure is mounting on the studios to come to an agreement with the writers. The WGA has said that it is willing to negotiate, but it is also prepared to fight for as long as it takes to get a fair deal. The strike has garnered support from other unions in the entertainment industry, with the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the Directors Guild of America (DGA) both releasing statements of solidarity with the writers.

The strike is not only affecting the writers themselves but also the wider industry. Production crews, actors, and other workers are all facing uncertainty as shows and movies are cancelled or delayed. The strike is also having an impact on the streaming services themselves, with some companies losing subscribers as a result of the uncertainty.

All of the top late-night shows, which are staffed by writers that pen monologues and jokes for their hosts, immediately went dark. NBC’s “The Tonight Show,” Comedy Central’s “Daily Show,” ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live,” CBS’s “The Late Show” and NBC’s “Late Night” all made plans for reruns through the week.

Seth Meyers, who was on the picket line as a writer at SNL during the last strike, also informed his fans that if there is a strike, Late Night with Seth Meyers will not run.

As the strike drags on, the question on everyone’s mind is how long it will last and what the final outcome will be. In 2007-2008, the WGA strike lasted for 100 days, causing widespread disruption and losses to the industry. This time around, with the rise of streaming and the increasing importance of writers in the industry, the stakes are even higher. It remains to be seen whether the studios will come to an agreement with the WGA, or whether the strike will continue for weeks or even months.

In conclusion, the 2023 Hollywood Writers’ Strike is a pivotal moment for the entertainment industry, with the future of television and movies hanging in the balance. The strike is a reminder that writers are the lifeblood of the industry, and that they deserve to be compensated fairly for their work. As the strike continues, the hope is that the studios will listen to the writers’ demands and come to a fair agreement that benefits everyone involved.

A Thai film that uses Khon performance to represent a portion of the Ramayana tale is nearly finished and will be released on December 5. The Thai government is supporting the production of the film in the hopes that it would help to promote Thailand’s cultural identity and soft power overseas.

Itthiphol Kunplome, the Minister of Culture, recently discussed the filming of “White Monkey,” which is based on the Hindu deity Hanuman. The Thai Media Fund and commercial sector partners are working together to create the film. The project’s founders want to one day build a museum dedicated to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s cultural legacies. Since 2005, King Bhumibol has worked alongside Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, to ensure the continued success of Khon performances in the Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theater. Furthermore, the movie is anticipated to aid in the promotion of Thailand’s soft power in the film industry.

The Khon performance film adapts the Ramayana epic for the screen using Khon theater, computer animation, and special effects. The narrative draws from both published works and the perspectives of Khon specialists. The ministry of culture claims that the video would amuse and impress viewers while also spreading awareness of Khon, Thailand’s national performing art. Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theater artists are joined by Khon specialists from a variety of institutions in this play.

On December 4 of this year, the film will be shown for the first time to the public. On Sunday, December 5th, Father’s Day, regular showings will resume in theaters around the country.
