Similan Islands Launch “Save Similan” Campaign Ahead of Tourism Reopening

Similan Islands National Park in Phang Nga Province has begun preparations for the upcoming tourism season with the launch of the “Save Similan” campaign, held ahead of the park’s reopening on October 15, 2025. The initiative, themed “Happy, Safe, and Eco-Friendly Travel,” seeks to ready the islands for visitors while promoting environmentally responsible tourism practices.

More than 400 people took part in the campaign, including local residents, tourism operators, and volunteers. Their collective effort focused on ensuring that the islands — one of Thailand’s most renowned marine destinations — remain both welcoming and ecologically protected.

The campaign aligns with the policy of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suchart Chomklin, who has emphasized the development of eco-tourism models that balance visitor enjoyment with long-term environmental preservation. According to Thai PBS World, the initiative is part of a broader government drive to raise tourism standards while maintaining the natural integrity of Thailand’s protected areas.

Among the key activities were workshops on the proper installation and maintenance of marine buoys, a “Return Hermit Crabs to Their Homes” event, and the symbolic release of green sea turtle hatchlings into the Andaman Sea. These actions aim to engage communities in marine conservation and reflect royal initiatives spearheaded by Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya, who has long championed projects to restore marine biodiversity and coastal ecosystems.

Officials said that Similan Islands National Park is now fully prepared for the new tourism season, with safety measures and environmental protections firmly in place. The park’s chief expressed gratitude to the Phang Nga Naval Base, the Third Naval Area Command, and all organizations and participants who contributed to the campaign’s success, underscoring the importance of cooperation in sustaining one of Thailand’s most celebrated natural treasures.
