Thailand’s “Half-Half Plus” Scheme Aims to Boost Spending and Support Citizens, Experts Say

Bangkok — Thailand’s government-backed “Half-Half Plus” co-payment program is being praised as a strategic extension of existing public policies designed to ease living costs and stimulate domestic spending, according to Dr. Stithorn Thananithichot, a lecturer at the Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University. The initiative, launched recently, is intended to provide financial relief to citizens while simultaneously supporting local businesses.

Dr. Stithorn highlighted that the program’s effectiveness lies in its subsidy structure, which is linked to taxpayers’ status. This approach not only encourages the proper use of the tax system but also channels funds more efficiently to small local businesses, ensuring broader economic circulation. “The initiative provides a dual advantage,” he noted, “offering short-term economic stimulus while promoting long-term fiscal discipline through better integration of taxation and public spending policies.”

Despite these benefits, Dr. Stithorn cautioned that technical challenges and system performance could affect the program’s success. He pointed out that many citizens are already familiar with the previous “Half-Half” scheme, so ensuring a smooth registration process is crucial. Safeguards against misuse are also necessary to maintain public confidence and achieve the program’s intended outcomes.

Dr. Stithorn’s remarks come as government officials continue to oversee the rollout of the program, emphasizing both economic stimulation and responsible fiscal management as key objectives.
