BANGKOK — Authorities report that repairs to the massive sinkhole on Samsen Road are progressing on schedule, with concrete already poured and sand infilling due to start Tuesday.
On Sunday morning, workers cleared debris from the collapsed section in front of Vajira Hospital and cut through underground communication cables blocking the site. Sand will next be poured into voids beneath the subsidence zone, including under the Samsen Police Station, to stabilise the ground.
Asst Prof Thanes Weerasiri, adviser to the Council of Engineers Thailand, confirmed that concrete pouring had gone as planned and engineers were waiting for it to set. Shotcrete is also being sprayed under the Samsen Police Station to strengthen its foundation.
Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn inspected the site, assuring the public there were no obstacles to the plan. Over 10 monitoring cameras have been installed to track ground movement 24/7, with worker safety emphasised as a top priority.
Despite the repairs, Vajira Hospital continues to operate normally, with more than 3,000 outpatients expected on Monday.
