The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) and Airports of Thailand (AOT) are advancing the master plan for Suvarnabhumi Airport, including the East Expansion of the main terminal and the new South Terminal. The project, valued at approximately 13 billion baht, has passed consultations with key agencies such as the Budget Bureau, Ministry of Finance, and National Economic and Social Development Council. Approval by the new Minister of Transport and the Cabinet is expected soon.
The South Terminal, covering 400,000 square meters, will replace the previously planned SAT-2 terminal and integrate seamlessly with the current APM automated people mover, while a new monorail will connect the terminal with nearby long- and short-term parking areas. This will improve passenger flow and reduce reliance on shuttle buses.
The expansion aims to increase Suvarnabhumi Airport’s annual passenger capacity from 65 million to 80 million upon completion of the East Expansion, and ultimately to 120 million once the full master plan is realized. Design inspiration comes from the elegant Suphannahong royal barge, blending Thai identity with modern architecture to enhance visitor experience.
Construction is slated to begin in mid-2026, with the South Terminal opening around 2030. Additional projects include a fourth runway, improved parking and taxiways, and enhanced connectivity across the airport’s terminals to establish Suvarnabhumi as a regional aviation hub.
