Swedish tourist detained for drone use in Pattaya

Swedish Tourist Detained for Flying Drone on Pattaya Beach

A Swedish national was briefly detained on the evening of August 3, 2025, after authorities in Pattaya discovered he was operating a drone in violation of Thailand’s nationwide ban on unmanned aerial vehicles.

The 28-year-old tourist, identified only as Mr. Neck, was reportedly using the drone to capture aerial photographs of Pattaya Beach when he was approached and arrested by Special Affairs officers around 10:00 p.m. The incident occurred along the beachfront in Chonburi Province, a popular destination for international visitors.

According to officials, Mr. Neck told authorities via a translator that he had just arrived in Thailand for a vacation and was unaware of the temporary restriction. He said his intention was simply to take scenic images of the beach and nearby coastline.

Thailand’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAAT) has imposed a temporary nationwide ban on all drone activity from July 30 through August 15, 2025, or until further notice. The measure, announced as a precautionary step, was prompted by heightened national security concerns related to increased tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border.

Following the arrest, officers confiscated the drone and escorted Mr. Neck to Pattaya City Police Station for further questioning. He was subsequently released with a formal warning after being briefed on the regulations. No charges were filed, authorities confirmed.
