Suvarnabhumi Airport Tops Global List for Airline Diversity, Eyes Top 20 Global Ranking

Bangkok, July 21, 2025 – Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport has secured the top global ranking for the highest number of airlines operating from a single airport, according to a recent report by Brilliant Maps. The Bangkok-based gateway now hosts 113 airlines, surpassing major aviation hubs such as Paris Charles de Gaulle (105), Dubai International (97), and Singapore Changi (82).

The ranking underscores Thailand’s strengthening position in global aviation following a steady post-pandemic recovery. The milestone reflects both the country’s geographic advantage and its growing reputation as a transit hub in Southeast Asia.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Suriya Juangroongruangkit praised the achievement, noting that Suvarnabhumi’s recognition affirms Thailand’s ambition to become a major international aviation center. “This is a proud moment for the Thai aviation sector,” he said. “We are committed to elevating our infrastructure and services to global standards.”

In response to the latest accolade, Suriya has directed Airports of Thailand (AOT) to implement comprehensive infrastructure upgrades across the country’s key airports. The immediate focus is on Suvarnabhumi, with the goal of positioning the airport among the world’s top 20 by 2030, a significant leap from its current ranking of 39th, which was already an improvement from 58th place.

Expansion plans include extending Terminal 1 on the eastern side, accelerating the construction of Terminal 2 near Bang Na-Trat Road, and completing a fourth runway to increase flight capacity. The upgrades are intended to boost Suvarnabhumi’s annual passenger handling capacity to 120 million, up from its current threshold.

“This is not just about quantity,” Suriya added. “We want to improve the overall experience — from check-in to boarding — for both domestic and international travelers.”

The Ministry of Transport is also positioning airport development as a cornerstone of Thailand’s broader economic recovery strategy, aiming to stimulate tourism, trade, and foreign investment, as reported by Channel 3 Plus.

Suvarnabhumi joins a list of top-performing international airports based on airline connectivity, with Istanbul Airport (93 airlines), Rome Fiumicino (92), Milan Malpensa (86), Shanghai Pudong (83), Tokyo Narita (83), and Frankfurt (80) also featured in the top 10.

In a separate development, Thailand’s Department of Disease Control (DDC) has announced plans to install indoor smoking rooms within Suvarnabhumi Airport to address illegal smoking in restrooms and other prohibited areas. Two prototype rooms are expected to be completed by the end of July, with safety checks and operational trials scheduled for August.
