Chiang Mai has been named the Best City in Asia in the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2025, with Bangkok, Phuket, and Ko Samui also securing top spots in global and regional rankings, further highlighting Thailand’s growing stature in the international travel scene.

According to the results of the 2025 Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards, Chiang Mai has emerged as the No. 1 city in Asia, earning a Reader Score of 91.94. The annual awards, based on nearly 180,000 reader submissions and over 657,000 votes, evaluate cities on key travel criteria such as culture, food, friendliness, landmarks, shopping, and value.

Chiang Mai also ranked second on the list of the World’s Top 25 Cities, underscoring its appeal as both a cultural and scenic destination. Voters praised the northern Thai city for its warm hospitality, local cuisine, and heritage sites, with particular mention of ancient temples like Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, bustling night markets, and the surrounding mountainous landscapes. Ethical elephant tourism experiences were also highlighted by readers, with one respondent describing Chiang Mai as “a great place to see the elephants and to feed and wash them.”

Bangkok maintained its long-standing reputation, placing third in Asia and fourth globally with a Reader Score of 91.34. It continues to attract global travellers with its mix of traditional and contemporary appeal—offering everything from historic temples and street food to luxury dining and nightlife.

Thailand also secured recognition in the Best Islands in Asia category, claiming two out of five spots. Phuket ranked fourth with a score of 89.47, noted for its beaches, upscale resorts, and marine activities. Ko Samui followed in fifth place, receiving a score of 89.31 and praise for its tropical scenery and relaxed ambiance.

All four destinations—Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Phuket, and Ko Samui—are considered Hall of Fame honourees in the awards, a designation for those that consistently rank among the top in their respective categories.

Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool stated that the results reflect the broad appeal of Thai destinations and the diversity of experiences the country offers.
