Thailand and Cambodia will reconvene the Joint Commission on Demarcation for Land Boundary (JBC) in Phnom Penh on 14 June, reaffirming their commitment to resolving territorial issues through dialogue and established bilateral frameworks.

The upcoming session follows a recent series of exchanges between military and government officials that contributed to reduced tensions and a mutual withdrawal of troops to positions held in 2024. Officials view the meeting as part of an ongoing process to manage the shared border in accordance with past agreements.

First convened in 1997, the JBC operates under the leadership of the countries’ respective foreign ministers. It is tasked with addressing land boundary matters based on historical treaties and validated cartographic records. Technical support is provided by the Joint Technical Sub-Committee (JTSC), which handles surveys and data assessments. The JBC last met in 2012 in Bangkok, making this session its eleventh since its inception.

Beyond the JBC, Thailand and Cambodia cooperate through other military-led platforms such as the General Border Committee and Regional Border Committees. These groups allow for coordination in specific sectors, enhancing communication and contributing to local stability.

A central document guiding these interactions is the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding on the Survey and Demarcation of the Land Boundary, often referred to as MOU 43. This agreement outlines a peaceful and environmentally conscious approach to border demarcation and dispute resolution.

The upcoming meeting will take place amid a broadly cooperative atmosphere. Both governments have emphasized their shared interest in long-term regional stability, strengthened bilateral ties, and exploring areas for joint development. Senior officials and military representatives are expected to attend the talks.
