The Thai government has pledged support to enhance farmers’ access to drones, aiming to boost agricultural management and emergency response capabilities. Deputy Prime Minister and Digital Economy and Society Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong made the announcement during a Senate session on Monday, responding to inquiries from Senator Premsak Piayura on the role of drones in improving logistics and agricultural practices.

The government sees unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as a valuable tool for managing natural disasters and farmland. Currently, more than 500 drones monitor over four million rai of land, supplying data essential for emergency planning and weather forecasting. The minister emphasized the importance of relying on domestically produced drones, which ensures national security and encourages the local manufacturing sector.

Although central funding for drone procurement has not been allocated, government agencies have the discretion to allocate their budgets for this purpose. In addition, the ministry has introduced standard pricing and quality benchmarks for drones used by state agencies. It has also established repair centers and facilitated drone flying sessions in agricultural areas to assist farmers with practical use.

A key focus is on regulatory reform to make drone ownership and usage more accessible. Senator Premsak urged for an easing of restrictions, allowing more widespread public use of UAVs. In response, Prasert acknowledged the need to streamline the permit process but reiterated that permission is still required for drone operations. He assured the Senate that the current rules would be reviewed to address these concerns.

The government’s approach aims to strengthen Thailand’s agricultural sector while expanding the use of drone technology across other vital industries.
