The Department of Highways (DoH) has extended the toll-free hours on Motorway No. 81, the Bang Yai-Kanchanaburi route, starting October 18, 2024. The revised schedule now allows free access every week from Friday at 3:00 p.m. to Monday at noon. The toll-free period previously ended on Sunday evenings. This extension covers the 51-kilometer stretch between Nakhon Pathom Toll Station and Kanchanaburi Toll Station, providing a key transport link to the western region of Thailand.
The decision to extend the free travel hours comes after positive public feedback during the trial run of Motorway No. 81, which saw a significant increase in road users. Over the recent long weekend from October 11 to 14, the route accommodated 32,450 vehicles, demonstrating its popularity. The motorway, which has reduced travel time between Nakhon Pathom and Kanchanaburi to just 30 minutes from the previous one hour, has been credited with improving transportation efficiency and boosting trade, tourism, and investment in Kanchanaburi Province.

Motorists can enter and exit only at the Nakhon Pathom and Kanchanaburi toll stations during the free period, which aims to enhance traffic flow and ensure public safety. The DoH hopes that by extending the free toll hours, more travelers will be encouraged to use the route, further stimulating economic growth in the region.
At a recent press briefing, Apirat Chaiwongnoi, Director-General of the DoH, highlighted the benefits of the motorway’s improved travel times and its potential impact on regional economic activities. He noted the route’s growing popularity and its role in reducing traffic congestion. Other officials and stakeholders involved in the project also attended the event, expressing optimism about the motorway’s role in supporting regional development.
