UPDATE: Former Thai Deputy National Police Chief Surachet “Big Joke” Hakparn has spearheaded a groundbreaking initiative in Pattaya, gathering support to impeach members of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) amidst allegations of corruption and ethical misconduct.

At a gathering hosted at the J A Plus Hotel, Big Joke led efforts to collect signatures for a petition aimed at removing a senior NACC official. This marks a significant move in Thai political history under Article 236 of the Constitution, as it is the first instance of such action against an independent body. By the end of the event, Big Joke had amassed over 13,000 signatures, nearing his goal of 20,000 required for submission to the House Speaker for further action.

“This is not driven by politics or personal vendettas,” asserted Big Joke, addressing accusations that the move was retaliatory against the NACC’s ongoing investigation into him and other police officers regarding alleged bribery linked to an online gambling network.

The campaign underscores a longstanding feud between Big Joke and the NACC, particularly targeting Suchart Trakulkasemsuk, though Big Joke did not explicitly name him in his statements. Previously, Big Joke had challenged the NACC’s impartiality, alleging bias and improper conduct in their investigations.

Big Joke’s actions come amidst a turbulent period for the suspended police official, who faces allegations of money laundering and misconduct. His suspension from the Royal Thai Police, effective since April, followed a disciplinary investigation related to the BNK Master gambling network.

The petition, once submitted to the House Speaker, will prompt further scrutiny into the allegations against the NACC official and could potentially lead to impeachment proceedings. Meanwhile, the NACC continues its investigation into Big Joke and his associates, further complicating the political landscape.

The development signals a critical juncture in Thailand’s political and law enforcement arenas, with implications that extend beyond the immediate parties involved. As the saga unfolds, stakeholders await the outcome of these investigations and the potential ramifications for the country’s governance and anti-corruption efforts.
