BANGKOK – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has announced its plans to combat traffic violations by installing artificial intelligence-assisted traffic cameras at over 200 intersections across the city.
Deputy Governor of Bangkok, Wisanu Subsompon, revealed that the trial phase of this initiative will commence this month, with AI-powered cameras being deployed at 20 major intersections. Two intersections, namely Arun Amarin and Wong Sawang, have already been equipped with active cameras since the beginning of June, while the remaining cameras are set to become operational by the end of the month.
These advanced cameras, provided by the Traffic and Transport Department, possess the capability to capture images of offending vehicles, including their license plates and drivers. Wisanu emphasized that the strategic placement of these cameras will effectively detect traffic violations. Offenders will be subjected to fines ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 baht, with corresponding tickets sent to the registered addresses of vehicle owners.
In addition to monitoring road violations, the AI-assisted cameras will also extend their surveillance to nearby footpaths, aiming to enhance pedestrian safety and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.
A recent study conducted by the BMA revealed that only a small percentage of traffic offenders who received tickets actually paid the fines imposed. By leveraging AI-assisted cameras and employing advanced technology to bolster enforcement capabilities, the BMA aims to increase compliance with traffic regulations and foster a safer and more efficient transportation system within the capital.
