Thailand’s Rainy Season Expected to Bring Less Precipitation, Drought in Some Areas

Thailand’s Meteorological Department has announced that the rainy season is set to begin in the third week of May, with a forecast of less precipitation than in previous years. According to the department, the amount of rainfall throughout the monsoon season is expected to be 5% less than the usual range.

The rainy season is predicted to commence with a lighter phase, with precipitation expected in 40-60% of areas across the country in May and June. However, in June and July, there will be a period of less rainfall, which could affect drought-prone areas without irrigation services. The east and west coasts of the southern region are likely to experience the most rainfall, with 60-80% of the areas expected to be affected in May and June.

In contrast, from August through September, there will be a high amount of rainfall, with some areas experiencing torrential rains, which could result in flash floods and river overflows. As a result, the department is advising the general public to conserve water during the less rainy months of June and July, to prepare for the coming dry period.

Furthermore, the department has stated that Thailand is expected to be impacted by the El Nino phenomenon from June to December 2033 and in February 2024. The Ocean Nino Index (ONI) indicates that this phenomenon will not last as long as La Nina, a weather phenomenon that typically lasts 2-3 years.
