A plan to significantly increase U-Tapao Airport’s capacity for accepting commercial aircraft by installing a new runway, taxiways, and amenities has been given preliminary Cabinet approval.

As stated by Government Spokesperson Ratchada Dhnadirek, the development will support enterprises in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC).

The airport most convenient to Pattaya, a prominent tourist destination, will be expanded to accommodate up to 60 million people annually. Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports in Bangkok and Phuket International Airport now service the majority of travelers.

The Royal Thai Navy planned to begin the U-Tapao development in October 2019 with a budget of 17.77 billion baht. The remaining 16.31 billion baht needed to fund the project will be sought by the Ministry of Finance.
